The health care component, like the agriculture component, is targeting the same 9 villages covered by the agriculture program.

Access to and proper use of nutrients constitute an important part in maintaining a good health status of any human being. This condition was seen to be lacking in Mafia during the 1995 Needs Assessment Survey.

The main goal of the Community based Health Education program is to improve the quality of life in general especially for women and children in the communities.

Caritas-DSM | Socio-Economic DevelopmentSister Auxilia Joseph and Sister Isabella Shirima, two Usambara Sisters, who live on Mafia Island are implementing the Community Health Care Program through training and supporting village health workers and traditional birth attendants. They follow up the animators and information providers trained by Dr. Maembe. They also demonstrate nutrition related activities. S. Gloria is in charge of the Community Health Care Program and S. Isabella is her assistant. Both Sisters are graduate nurses, in addition S. Gloria is also a midwife.

Our strategy includes:
  • To increase public awareness on health issues and prevention of common communicable diseases.
  • To improve feeding practices particularly for mothers and children under 5 years.
  • To deal with individual and communal attitudes and beliefs which are a hindrance to good health practices.
Village Agriculture and Health Communities (VAHC) have been formed in all 9 targeted villages in order to involve the community in all planned health activities.

Two Community Health Educators from each village have received special training to act as animators and information providers in their respective communities.

Training has also been provided to 58 Traditional Birth Attendants (TBAs) in order to improve the services they give to expectant mothers and attend to home deliveries.

Other components in the program include teaching communities in vegetable production, food /vegetable processing and preservation, food intake/consumption, environment and sanitation.
